Palm Elementary School continues to develop innovative, real-life learning experiences using transformative learning techniques inspired by the District’s partnership with New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL), a global initiative designed to inspire learning and amplify academic achievement.

This school year, Palm Elementary fostered deep learning by following NPDL’s six Global Competencies: Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

Some of their newly developed innovative practices include expanding computer, science, technology, engineering and mathematics and after school programs, increasing visual and performing arts opportunities and participating in various NPDL and ethnic studies professional development workshops.

“At Palm Elementary, we continue to embed NPDL across all grade levels, encouraging students to explore their passions, deepen their knowledge and courageously develop new skills,” Principal Sandy Carbajal said. “Thank you to our outstanding educators and teachers on special assignments for their hard work, collaboration and devotion to creating welcoming learning environments and interactive learning experiences for all students. Palm Elementary is Home of the Panthers, where students truly become global learners.”

Hacienda La Puente Unified provides several opportunities that inspire deep learning, such as career technical education pathways, Speech and Debate, Conga Kids, the Youth Cinema Project in partnership with the Latino Film Institute, an ethnic studies curriculum for TK-12th-grade students, and many other programs.

To celebrate this year's growth and successes with NPDL, Hacienda La Puente Unified will hold a Districtwide NPDL event open to HLPUSD families at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 24 at Willow Adult Education Center, 14101 Nelson Ave., La Puente. During the showcase, all schools will highlight their personalized practices, progress and accomplishments from this school year with the District community. 

"Thank you to the Board of Education for your unwavering support, the entire NPDL team for your partnership and tools to help our District succeed and all our outstanding educators and administrators your dedication to deep learning,” Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez said. "This year, our goal was to explore, learn and grow and I couldn't be prouder of the creativity and collaboration displayed across campuses. I encourage you all to attend the event on April 24 to see how our schools are engaging with NPDL and join us as we celebrate our successes throughout this amazing school year."
